The Joy of Lipreading [Comic]

Ah, lipreading — the wild, crazy game of reaching the elusive 80% comprehension of what people say. No prizes, just smug satisfaction at getting the wrong idea. :P

Lipreading can be useful in a pinch, but seriously I think time is better spent gesturing and writing. I’m guilty of using it a little more than I’d like — to me it’s a tool for brief, quick conversations. But too much and it’s smile and nod time, with quite some time after trying to figure out what was said. It’s awkward.

So, friends… keep pen and paper handy!

Transcripts

In a grocery store, a cashier speaks to a young deaf woman. She spends her evening trying to figure it out -- going through the motions of making dinner, eating, and finally getting into her bed, her mind racing all the while. Finally, she pops up with the answer, waking her sleeping husband.

"Your broccoli has dermatitis!"
